Missoula Strikers Spring Academy
Registration is now OPEN. Strikers Academy is for all players born in 2007, 2008, and 2009.
What is the Academy?
The academy provides a fun environment for boys and girls ages 8-11 to develop their skills, both to ignite a passion for soccer and to reach their potential in the sport. This is typically seen as the bridge between Micro Strikers, which is Strikers’ recreational introduction to soccer for 5-11 year-olds, and our Competitive program which begins around age 12.
Who is it for?
The 2018 spring academy will run for 11 weeks: starting April 2nd and ending June 6th. The Academy program is specifically designed for kids 8-11 years of age. This age range is often referred to as the “Golden Age of learning”. It is around this period that young children make the biggest strides in their development and understanding, not just of a particular sport, but also becoming fully aware of their own body. The Academy program aims to take full advantage of this period by offering our young players an ideal environment to learn all the necessary soccer and movement techniques required for this sport. Whether a beginner or seasoned player our academy is a good fit to hone in on skill and technique development.
When is it?
Weather dependent the Academy will begin April 2nd and end on June 6th.
Practices are held at Fort Missoula Regional Park, Turf Field, Monday & Wednesday evenings, 4:30-6pm.
Tournaments that the academy will attend are: Hotshots May 11,12,13th – Helena Arsenal Invitational May 19,20th – Three Blind Refs June 2,3rd. Again, players are not required to attend these as there is an additional cost of $85 for these events.
Why choose the academy?
The over emphasis on competition at the youngest ages within youth soccer has not been healthy for player development and this has been proven by the limited number of truly technical players that progress into the oldest age groups of the club. We watch competitive players during the spring and high school soccer seasons but the absence of true technique has been alarming. The emphasis for too long has been to build on players’ athletic ability and ignore players’ technical development.
The Academy aims to help kids develop all of these techniques and skills in a fun and enjoyable environment. Delivering fun coaching sessions with disguised techniques and introductory tactics will be the key behind our young players development and love for the game. Within the Academy, we do not focus on the result or on wins and losses. The most important aspect of academy is the development of the individual and group as a whole. We measure our success based on the physical and mental improvements made by each child.
How is it done?
With the Academy we focus on skill development with a structured curriculum. This curriculum guides young players through appropriate stages during this period, which is often referred to as “The Golden Age of Learning”
The Academy develops fundamental skills such as:
- Agility, Balance, Coordination & Speed (ABC’s)
- Basic Running Style and Form
- Dribbling & Directional Movement with and without the ball
- Passing & Striking
- Close Control & Juggling
- Attacking & Defending Principles
